WST consists of the traditional bluegrass “make-up” with “stand up” bass fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and banjo.  In addition, the sound of a harmonica is often heard, as well as a most unique sound of twin harmony fiddles.  The band is driven by the banjo and bass, which gives a sense of power and direction.  Vocally, harmony is the key with often as much as “four-part” blend giving a sold sound that makes you want to “sing along.”  A highlight of the vocals is the high tenor sounds bringing traditional and civil war tunes, such as “Danny Boy” and “Lorena” alive.  The WST Band is one of the most active bluegrass bands in Austin.  Road trips are generally limited to various festivals and performances in the state of Texas.  Humor is a distinct characteristic of WST as it entertains audiences, helping them to forget (for a time) their worries and focus on this hard-driving musical group.

Selections of music and songs are drawn from the Appalachian “wailing” sound, some blues, country western, and a lot of gospel.  After releasing four cassette tapes, WST produced a CD album entitled “WST Plays Live at the Green Mesquite.”  The Green Mesquite Bar-B-Q in Austin has been “home base” for WST since 1987 where it has served as the Sunday Night band for the famous and traditionally-laden restaurant.  Though not totally traditional bluegrass, WST is an exciting experience for any music lover.  It is interactive by nature with the audience and often invites fans, as well as musicians to come to the stage and “perform.”
